#SayHerName

This project is inspired by the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. This is a dance interpretation dedicated the injustices of black lives in America and  the case of Sandra Bland. This performance took place at the Black Lives Matter Houston Texas (BLMHTX) symposium event at Texas Southern University Febuary 22nd.

In the aspect of design, the costumes are a relfection of these women African roots and culture. I choose the color pallette red, purple, and gold to symbolize royalty and power to capture these women in the sense of strength and worth. The choreographer envsionened the women to be topless with huge hand crafted necklaces or chest peices to cover their breast but still staying true to rawness of the African Tribal concept. In this performance, the dancers backs are facing us to visually convey the message of " Dont look back; moving foward". On their backs, in white paint, are written Say- Her- Name. Each dancer owning one word of the hashtag. This is a reminder that, along with the police brutality of men, women are affected by these acts of injustice also. Despite these trepidations, these people are strong and able to not only endure but dyfy gravity.
